Decato | 21 Nov 2009 - Chrome OS was announced few days ago, and I’m sure most of you have read the details. It’s built for netbooks or nettops, base  on Linux and is primary a web browsing OS. Which kind of makes sense since nowadays a lot of people just turn on their PC to surf the web and nothing else, so why would you want to deal with all those bios, hardware, whatever layer.

Now the dev build is available for download.  No you can’t install it on your PC , it’s just an image for VM software. You will need VM ware workstation or this little free cross platform virtual machine called VirtualBox created by Sun Microsystem. You can download VirtualBox at:  http://www.virtualbox.org/

So what are you waiting for?  Get over to GDGT site or this torrent to get it. The torrent download will give you a .BZ2 file which you will need WINRAR or 7-Zip to extract. Go have fun while I figure out how to change the dang resolution in virtual box. :P Here I leave you the simple explanation of Chrome OS:

This OS isn’t just for browsing. It’s to showcase cloud computing. Google wants users to have full features (spreadsheet, document editing, photo editing, coding, etc.) but no locally installed applications. They built this version for lightweight devices (netbooks, laptops) but they are trying to change the whole paradigm of how we think of ‘personal data’ and application ownership.
